چکیده
Herbal plant extracts used as medicine are now presently being used as a replacement for synthetic drugs. Sofowora [1] cites the definition of World Health Organization (WHO) Consultative Group concerning medicinal plants as any plant that has in one or more of its organs, metabolic substances which could be used for therapeutic purposes or which are precursors for the synthesis of useful drug. Medicinal plants are used as raw materials for herbal medicinal products and supplements due to their cheap cost, efficacy and because they have no much side effects when compared to those of synthetic formulations. The use of Turmeric has not been fully explored in the aspect of their antimicrobial properties and hence they have not been fully used as antimicrobial agents.

Comparative Study of Pharmacognostical and Preliminary Phytochemical Investigation of Curcuma Longa Leaves and Rhizomes
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a perennial herb, belonging to family Zingiberaceae. The rhizomes and leaves of turmeric were extracted separately with ethanol by Soxhlet extraction and the percentage yield of rhizomes and leaves of Turmeric was 12% and 17% yield respectively. The extract of turmeric rhizomes and leaves can increase the bile flow, offer protection of the gall bladder and also the l...

متن کاملEvaluation of antimicrobial activity of curcuminoids isolated from turmeric
In a search for plant extracts with potent antimicrobial activity, turmeric (Curcuma longa) was extracted to get volatile oil and total curcuminoids .Further total curcuminoids portion was isolated by column chromatography to get curcumin , bisdemethoxycurcumin and demethoxycurcumin. The isolated curcuminoids were identified and characterized by melting point, thin layer chromatography, infra r...
متن کاملStudy of antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity of cinnamon (Cinamomum tamala), ginger (Zingiber officinale) and turmeric (Curcuma longa)
Ethanol extract of ginger, turmeric and cinnamon was assessed for its antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiinflammatory activity. The antioxidant activity was determined by measuring FRAP (ferric reducing-antioxidant power) assay. The antibacterial efficacy was determined using paper disc method against different gram negative bacterial and sensitivity in terms of zones of inhibition of all extra...
متن کاملFree radical scavenging activity and characterization of sesquiterpenoids in four species of Curcuma using a TLC bioautography assay and GC-MS analysis.
The sesquiterpenoids are one of major groups of antioxidants in Curcuma besides curcuminoids. However, the real substances contributing to the antioxidant activity are still unknown. In this paper, the antioxidant activity of sesquiterpenoids in four species and two essential oils from Curcuma genus was determined and compared based on TLC separation and DPPH bioautography assay. Their antioxid...
